12 World Tour 1 (69-74; w Tony Bedard; a Paul Pelletier).
[From Marvel Comics: The Exiles return to prime earth, only to find it not so prime anymore. So not only do the Exiles have House of M to deal with, they have to face the most powerful mutant on the planet!] Book of the Week 3/1/06: The Little Book That Could, Exiles has been quietly chugging along for 12 volumes now, surviving runs by fanboy bashing favorites Chuck Austin and series creator Judd Winick (perhaps the ultimate test will be the upcoming Chris Claremont run). The premise is simple but expansive: A group of alternate-universe characters are brought together to set various realities that have been tampered with right. In the last volume, storylines that have been with the series since the beginning were resolved and a new, simpler status quo took root (the characters now control their own destiny, and now just want to get back to their various homes), making this probably a good jumping-on volume (qualified because I read this series in trades). Apparently, they finally make it to the 616 Earth, only to land there in the middle of House of M. This is probably not anybody's favorite book, but it's always been a steady, quiet pleasure. |
13 World Tour 2 (75-83; w Tony Bedard; a Jim Calafiore, Paul Pelletier, Casey Jones). [From Marvel Comics: The Exiles are gonna party like it’s 2099! What are you, an insane person!? It’s off to the Squadron Supreme universe, the Incredible Hulk’s Future Imperfect and the world of Heroes Reborn for some major butt-kicking! And finally, the team says good-bye to those that have fallen in the past and must make some very difficult choices about the future.] |
14 The New Exiles (84-89, Annual 1; w Tony Bedard; a Jim Calafiore, Paul Pelletier). [From Marvel Comics: SNIKT, to the sixth power! With the Exiles fired, it’s time for a new group of dimension-jumping heroes. Wolverine has always been known as the best there is at what he does, so six Wolverines must be really, really, REALLY good at what they do! Can the Exiles get their jobs back from these scene-stealing Canucks? Don’t bet on it! Plus: Silver Surfer…destroyer of worlds!? The old Exiles vs. new Exiles! And whatever happened to Thunderbird?] |
15 Enemy of the Stars (90-94; w Chris Claremont; a Paul Pelletier). [From Marvel Comics: A new era for Exiles begins here! Legend Chris Claremont (Uncanny X-Men) starts a run that will have Exiles fans talking for years to come. And he's not the only one joining up, as X-Woman Psylocke joins the team, as well. What is she doing there? How will the team deal with her arrival? And what new villains plan on destroying every world in existence?!] |
16 Starting Over (95-100, Days of Then and Now 1-shot; w Chris Claremont, Mike Raicht; a Clayton Henry, Steve Scott, Tom Grummett, Arnold Pander, Zach Howard, Wayne Nichols, Mario Gully, Ronan Cliquette). [From Marvel Comics: The team comes back from a mission that couldn't have turned out more bizarre, but this time Heather's missing and the Crystal Palace is void of any signs of life. Where did the Exiles' trusted arm-chair general disappear to? Why is the Palace empty? What new doom awaits them in the next dysfunctional dimension? Welcome new penciler Clayton (UNCANNY X-MEN) Henry and cover artist Tomm (AGENTS OF ATLAS) Coker as they join X-MEN legend Chris Claremont on a story that will change the team forever. Plus: The team may have finally found the perfect world: An Earth with no crime, hate or fear-ruled by one the most diabolical villains of the Marvel universe: Victor Von Doom! Is this some twisted façade or have the Exiles finally stumbled on to utopia? Find out in "The Dream of Two Good Men." And finally, it's adios, Exiles! They've left their footprints across the multiverse for a hundred issues, but what threat will make Blink and Co. close up shop for good? It's not what you expect!] 2/13/08 |

X-Men 1 (114-126, Annual 2001; w Grant Morrison; a Frank Quitely, Ethan
Van Sciver, Igor Kordey, Leinil Francis Yu). [Contains all
the material from both editions of the E Is For Extinction trade. From
Marvel Comics: "A new generation of mutants is emerging, that much
is certain. They will be called freaks. Genetic monstrosities. They will
be mocked, feared, spat upon and accused
of stealing human jobs,
eating human food, taking human partners. But they are emerging in the inner
cities, in the suburbs, in the deserts and in the jungles. And when they
emerge, they will need teachers, people who can help them overcome their
anger and show them how to use their strange gifts responsibly. They will
need us." An army of Sentinels has obliterated the mutant nation of
Genosha. The sadistic Cassandra Nova has blown Professor X's cover, exposing
him as a mutant to the world. The Beast is in intensive care, Cyclops is
lost in space, Jean Grey is slowly dying of a mysterious mutant virus, and
Wolverine is hopelessly overmatched. The only two members left to defend
the X-Men from alien invasion are Emma Frost, recently the mutant heroes'
sworn enemy, and Xorn, a powerful healer imprisoned underground for the
last two decades. It's been a very bad year for the X-Men, and it's all
about to get much, much worseall courtesy of new writer Grant Morrison.
Gone are the gaudy spandex superhero costumesreplaced by slick, black
leather and an attitude to match. With a stripped-down roster and a cinematic
story line, Morrison catapults the X-Men into the 21st century with style
and innovation.] Old Book of the Week 12/15/04 Gormuu's

X-Men 2 (127-141; w Grant Morrison; a Igor Kordey, John Paul Leon, Phil
Jimenez, Ethan Van Sciver, Frank Quitely). [From Marvel
Comics: Life was simpler in the early days of Professor Xavier's Institute
for Higher Learning. Homo superior students such as Cyclops, Marvel Girl
and the Beast came to this clandestine school to master their powers - and
win the trust of humans who hated and feared them. Under Xavier's guidance,
these young X-Men protected humankind from the violent machinations of evil
mutants like Magneto and his Brotherhood. Xavier's dream of peace and harmony
between humans and mutants seemed well within reach. Times have changed.
Xavier has been revealed as a mutant to the public, exposing his school
to intense worldwide media scrutiny. Magneto is dead, along with the sixteen
million mutant inhabitants of Genosha - slain by Sentinels, super-adaptable
mutant-hunting robots. After years of development, the U.S. government has
unleashed Weapon XII, an experimental mutant killer. In spite of the assistance
of the mysterious Fantomex, one X-Man won't escape his rampage alive. With
mutant/human conflict now at an all-time high, a new generation of mutants
at the Xavier Institute brutally rejects its headmaster's pacifistic ideals.
Led by the powerful Omega-level telepath Quentin Quire, several rebellious
students spark a riot - threatening to tear the school apart. When the X-Men
are forced to battle their own students, can Xavier's Institute survive
the massacre? This new volume continues writer Grant Morrison's Eisner Award-nominated
run on the flagship X-Men title. Reflecting the stripped-down roster and
non-stop excitement of the two blockbuster motion pictures, this is the
X-Men at their best.] Gormuu's

2 Life and Death Matters (hardcover not numbered; 7-12; w Peter David; a Ariel Olivetti, Dennis Calero, Renato Arlem, Roy Allan Martinez). [From Marvel Comics: Jamie Madrox comes face-to-face with the thing that terrifies him the most: having to make a decision. The divisiveness of Civil War has spread to his own team: Half of them want to cooperate with the government; the other half wants to take a stand against it. It’s Jamie’s choice that may well decide whether X-Factor stays together or cracks apart. And matters aren’t being helped by Quicksilver, who offers Rictor the opportunity to get his powers back — but at what price? Plus: They’ve been a thorn in X-Factor’s side since the beginning, and now things are coming to a head. X-Factor’s newest assignment causes them to again cross paths with their arch rivals, Singularity Investigations. The result is revelations that strike to the very core of who and what Jamie Madrox is.] |

Except that when Madrox decides it’s time to start gathering in the stray dupes that are still wandering around, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent doesn’t especially want to go...and S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t especially inclined to let him go. New Beginnings (116-120; w Peter Milligan; a Mike Allred).
[From Marvel Comics: Adored by humans, reviled by their fellow mutants,
X-Force does the dirty jobs that others cant, or wont. All they
want in return is fame, money, sex, power and lucrative endorsement deals.]
Old Book of the Week 4/13/05: Another book that took the concept of the
super-hero both as its subject matter and its theme was Peter Milligan and
Mike Allred's X-Force revamp, which jettisoned the old cast and re-imagined
the X-Men as a group of glory-hungry second-stringers with a rich benefactor
and a vicious manager. The satire was at its sharpest and most painful in
the first couple volumes (also collected in the amazing hardcover edition,
if you're lucky enough to find it), before it was retitled X-Statix
and began to lose its way. But the X-Force issues are sheer genius. |
2 Final Chapter (121-129; w Peter Milligan; a Mike Allred, Darwyn
Cooke, Duncan Fegredo). [From Marvel Comics: Critically
acclaimed creators Peter Milligan (Spider-Man's Tangled Web Volume 1, Human
Target) and Mike Allred (Madman, The Atomics) kick down the doors of conventional,
mainstream comics by turning a classic concept on its ear. Insightful, irreverent
and wickedly entertaining, X-Force deconstructs the human-mutant dynamic
as set forth in the pages of X-Men! Long persecuted for their genetic differences,
some mutants are cashing in on their special gifts. Widely accepted by the
general populace, the members of the all-new, all-different X-Force do the
dirty jobs that others can't, or won't. All they want in return is fame,
money, sex, power and lucrative endorsement deals! Now, break out the Kleenex
- and the body bags - as the X-Force embarks on its most hazardous mission
yet. Whose swan song will it be? The Orphan? The Anarchist? U-Go Girl? Or
maybe even Doop?] |

1 Famous, Mutant, and Mortal (116-129; w
Peter Milligan; a Mike Allred, Darwyn Cooke, Duncan Fegredo).
[From Marvel Comics: They're definitely not the X-Men, living in
secrecy, feared by society - these mutants are the darlings of the entertainment
world, idolized and admired by millions. With their superhuman powers and
cutting-edge costumes, and an image crafted by the best marketing money
can buy, the members of X-Force are in it for all the fame, sex and power
they can get! Of course, being part of the X-Force media machine has its
downside: Most of the team's so-called "missions" are nothing
more than carefully choreographed publicity stunts, intended to pump up
corporate profits and sell more merchandise to the masses. Add in the fact
that all too often a member or two doesn't make it home alive, and there's
quite a downside to all this glory. But aren't a blurry morality and an
abbreviated life span just a small price to pay for a shot at unlimited
fame and fortune? |
