Absolute Sandman

It's coming! Some notes from Gaiman's blog:

  • "It's going to be a four book set, by the way, of about 600 pages per book, and I believe they'll come out over a couple of years."
  • "We're recolouring the first 18 issues, and may do some colour fixes beyond that (Brief Lives is particularly problematic, not because Danny's colours were bad but because the colour separators in Ireland didn't follow instructions.) There are a lot of Morpheus word balloons that are hard to read that we may simply have Todd Klein re-letter, for example. But nothing's going to be "improved" or rewritten or even changed, if that's what you're worrying about, unless it was an error at the time and we simply couldn't afford to fix it then."
  • "Incidentally, the stories will be going into Absolute Sandman in order of publication, wherever possible, so the short stories from Fables and Nocturnes will be back in the places they came out, rather than all together in one place."
  • "I suspect the Death books will wind up, along with some other content, like the Jeff Jones short story and the Death Gallery, in an Absolute Death, in a year or so."
  • "Leaving aside the crispness of the reproduction here, one thing that's impressed me over and over as we've worked on ABSOLUTE SANDMAN is the number of places where what seemed like poor storytelling on an artist's part turned out to make perfect sense once the colouring was fixed. Danny Vozzo coloured 80% of Sandman anyway, so he's fixing Preludes and Nocturnes and two issues of Dream Country. In addition to the first 21 issues, we're also reprinting the thumbnails, script and pencils for Sandman #19, "Midsummer Night's Dream". And there will eventually be a box-case large enough to hold all four volumes of Absolute Sandman."

Endless Nights (collection of new stories; w Neil Gaiman; a Frank Quitely, Milo Manara, Glenn Fabry, P. Craig Russell, Miguelanxo Prado, Barron Storey, Bill Sienkiewicz). [From DC Comics: Before becoming a New York Times two-time best-selling author, Neil Gaiman revolutionized the comic-book medium with THE SANDMAN. The most acclaimed and award-winning comic series of the last decade, THE SANDMAN is a rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy, in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven. Critically acclaimed and award winning THE SANDMAN set new standards for comics literature, and the ten volumes of THE SANDMAN library are set as one of the high-watermarks of the field. THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS will be a delight to fans of Gaiman's work and newcomers to the graphic novel medium. Whether haunting, bittersweet, erotic or nightmarish, the seven stories in this book–one for each of the Endless siblings–reveal strange secrets and surprising truths about the Sandman and his family. Each story is illustrated by some of the greatest comics artists from around the world. P. Craig Russell draws the story of DEATH and one day, two hundred years ago, on an island in the Venice lagoon - a day that goes on forever. Milo Manara paints a story of love and DESIRE in ancient times as a beautiful young woman gets everything she wants … at a price. Bill Sienkiewicz shows us who gets to enter DELIRIUM'S realm to perform a strange rescue mission. Miguelanxo Prado takes us back for a DREAM of the dawn of time, when stars spoke and even the Endless were young. Barron Storey creates fifteen heartrending portraits of DESPAIR. Glenn Fabry draws a story of archaeologists uncovering the future and learning a little too much about DESTRUCTION. Frank Quitely draws a final commentary on the DESTINY of these Endless Nights. Neil Gaiman always promised he would return to the world of THE SANDMAN. Now, aided by some of the finest International artists, he has returned to the world and characters he made famous, to bring us new dreams ... and nightmares.] Old Book of the Week 6/15/05: [This collection of shorts written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by a galaxy of astonishing artists is somewhat uneven, as anthologies tend to be; but in this case, the uneveness ranges from excellent to merely very good. Gaiman often packs a surprising whallop in only a few pages, and the artists are some of the most inventive and stylized in the history of the medium. Endless Nights is a seminar in how good unconventional comics can be without losing touch with what makes comics comics.]

Our intrepid heroes have been contacted by young Annika Abernathy, a student at a posh International Academy in Chicago. It seems that Annika's best friend has vanished. For Rowland and Paine to investigate the case properly, they decide to enroll as students at the school. And since it's an all-girls academy, the duo is forced to go undercover - in drag. Secret passages, food fights, and far too many fashionistas abound as the Dead Boy Detectives solve the case and learn a lot about life from the precocious daughters of international ambassadors and famous rock stars.] Book of the Week 7/7/05: Created by Neil Gaiman in Sandman, made stars by Ed Brubaker in a mini-series, the Dead Boys now become Manga characters in Jill Thompson's second Manga Sandman spin-off (which leads to inappropriate speculations on what Thompson and Azzarello's home life must be like). Sandman Mystery Theater

1 The Tarantula (1-4; w Matt Wagner; a Guy Davis). [From DC Comics: New York: the late 1930s. Wesley Dodds, the masked man known as the Sandman, moves through a decadent, post-Depression world, where gangsters dance with debutantes at high-society balls as dark clouds gather over Europe and chilling figures wander the night. The stage is set and the curtain rises on Sandman Mystery Theatre. Like the classic film-noir detectives Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, Wesley Dodds is a man of mystery. In his signature trench coat and gas mask, he conveys a palpable air of menace, yet he is a haunted and obsessed man, driven by his disturbing dreams and an unrelenting sense of justice to stalk the shadowy trails of bizarre underworld criminals. In this, the first collected volume of the critically acclaimed crime series written by Matt Wagner and illustrated by Guy Davis, the Sandman follows a twisted trail of abuse and betrayal into the web of the villain known only as THE TARANTULA.]
2 The Face and the Brute (5-12; w Matt Wagner; a John Watkiss & R.G. Taylor). [From DC Comics: Collecting the second and third story arcs (issues #5-12) from writer Matt Wagner's acclaimed reimagination of the original Golden Age Sandman, SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE VOL. 2: THE FACE AND THE BRUTE finds the Sandman of 1939, Wesley Dodds, and his possible paramour (and narrator) Dian Belmont involved in a series of grisly murders in New York's Chinatown — murders that threaten to reignite the bad old days of the Tong Wars, when blood ran in the streets like water. Following the drama of "The Face," Wesley and Dian are confronted with corruption at the other end of the social scale in "The Brute," as they track down the trail of misery left by a man whose gross sensual appetites for lust and violence are rivaled only by his wealth.]
3 The Vamp (13-16; w Matt Wagner & Steven T. Seagle; a Guy Davis). [From DC Comics: Collecting the fourth story arc (issues #13-16) from the re-imagination of the original Golden Age Sandman, The Vamp continues the story of Wesley Dodds and his soon-to-be paramour (and narrator) Dian Belmont as they become entangled in mystery from two different directions.] Book of the Week 6/15/05: [This intriguing spin-off from The Sandman features the Golden Age Sandman character in stories set during World War II, that are more detective than super-hero. This third volume features the return of Guy Davis, perfectly suited for the book, as regular artist, and the addition of Steven Seagle as co-writer with series creator Matt Wagner. The series as a whole is a nifty blend of 30s style and 90s sensibilities, and would be a welcome addition to the collection of somebody who's not entirely satisfied with super-heroes, but is not ready to go whole-hog Vertigo.]
4 The Scorpion (17-20; w Matt Wagner & Steven T. Seagle; a Guy Davis). [From DC Comics: What nightmares will haunt those driven before the lash? "People starving on the streets and we sit here like kings of the world. Throwing around imaginary money like it was newsprint." Wesley Dodds, a man goaded by unquiet dreams to fight injustice in the night, is a person of considerable means. But wealth cannot insulate him from the evils of a world descending into total war, or protect him from the rage of those damaged souls who inhabit its shadows. In his masked excursions as the Sandman, Dodds has gazed upon some of the darkest faces of human corruption, all the while struggling to keep himself in the light. The love growing between him and Dian Belmont has been a lifeline in this effort, but the weight of his secret life is straining their bond to the breaking point - and when The Scorpion comes calling, Dodds will learn just how much he needs Dian, both in and out of his mask.]
