Volume 2
4 True Believers (Digest; 1-6; w Brian K. Vaughan; a Adrian Alphona). [From Marvel Comics: When a group of teenagers discover that their parents are actually super-villains, they run away from home ... but that's only step one. Now that the evil Pride is gone, nearly every bad guy in the Marvel Universe is trying to fill the power vacuum in Los Angeles, and the Runaways are the only heroes who can stop them. Plus: What does a mysterious new team of young heroes want with the Runaways, and which fan-favorite Marvel characters are part of this group?]
5 Escape to New York (Digest; 7-12; w Brian K. Vaughan; a Adrian Alphona, Takeshi Miyazawa). [From Marvel Comics: The team’s lineup changes forever in the perfect jumping-on point for the series that Wizard said “could be the most original book to focus on teenaged super heroes since Spider-Man debuted all the way back in 1962!” When a dangerous alien invades Los Angeles, the Runaways’ own Karolina Dean may be the only hero in the Marvel Universe who can stop him... but at what cost? Plus: The Runaways embark on a coast-to-coast adventure, guest-starring Cloak and Dagger AND the New Avengers! When Cloak is accused of a crime he didn’t commit by the heroes of New York City, the vigilante is forced to turn to the teenage Runaways for help. This story will take our teens to a place they’ve never been: NYC!] Book of the Week 3/22/06: It's a little early for my annual Runaways selection, but hey, it's another slow week, and Seven Soldiers was just BotW a little while ago. This is another fine outing, with two stories: a two-parter in which one of the Runaways finds an interstellar destiny, and a four-parter when the team goes to New York to help Cloak (of And Dagger fame) clear his name, with the New Avengers getting on his case. The battle between Wolverine and Molly alone is worth the price of admission.
6 Parental Guidance (Digest; 13-18; w Brian K. Vaughan; a Adrian Alphona). [From Marvel Comics: When the youngest member of the Runaways is separated from her teammates, Molly Hayes must survive a night alone on the mean streets of Los Angeles! The eleven-year-old mutant girl soon hooks up with a NEW group of runaways, but is their mysterious leader a hero or a villain?]
7 Live Fast (Digest; 19-24; w Brian K. Vaughan; a Adrian Alphona, Mike Norton). [From Marvel Comics: The Runaways say good-bye to the past, and make hard decisions about their future. Plus: Still reeling from the events of YOUNG AVENGERS/RUNAWAYS, the teenage heroes must now confront a horrific enemy who threatens to tear the team apart.]
Super-Sized Hardcovers
Volume 1 (Vol. 1, 1-18; w Brian K. Vaughan; a Adrian Alphona & Craig Yeung, Takeshi Miyazawa). [From Marvel Comics: This deluxe hardcover collects all 18 issues of the Runaways' first series, plus a hefty helping of DVD-style extras! In PRIDE & JOY, six young friends discover their parents are all secretly super-powered villains! Finding strength in one another, the shocked teens run away from home and straight into the adventure of their lives - vowing to turn the tables on their evil legacy. In TEENAGE WASTELAND, the Runaways find a kindred spirit in a daring young stranger and welcome him into their fold. But will this dashing young man help the teenagers defeat their villainous parents...or tear them apart? Plus: Who do you send to catch a group of missing, runaway teenage super heroes? Marvel's original teen runaway crimefighters, Cloak and Dagger, making their first major appearance in years! In THE GOOD DIE YOUNG, the world as we know it is about to end, and the Runaways are the only hope to prevent it! Our fledgling teenage heroes have learned how their parents' criminal organization began, and now they must decide how it should END. As the Runaways' epic battle against their evil parents reaches its shocking conclusion, the team's mole stands revealed, and blood must be shed. Which kids will still be standing when the smoke finally clears?] Book of the Week 8/10/05: Runaways has survived basically on the sales of the digests, which is good, because it's a good series. Now, we get the chance to enjoy the entire 18-issue first series in Marvel's nifty super-sized hardcover format. The line art probably won't benefit from the extra size (clean and open, it looked fine at digest size), but the good paper will avoid the muddy coloring that marred much of the digest run (hint: dark, subtle colors don't print well on newsprint), and Jo Chen's wonderful painted covers richly deserve the deluxe treatment. And the story's great, too, about a group of teens who discover that their parents are super-villains and go on the run.]
Volume 2 (Vol. 2, 1-12 + Free Comic Day issue; w Brian K. Vaughan; a Adrian Alphona, Takeshi Miyazawa, Skottie Young). Plus: What does a mysterious new team of young heroes want with the Runaways, and which fan-favorite Marvel characters are part of this group? And in ESCAPE TO NEW YORK, the Runaways embark on a coast-to-coast adventure, guest-starring Cloak and Dagger AND the New Avengers! When Cloak is accused of a crime he didn’t commit by the heroes of New York City, the vigilante is forced to turn to the teenage Runaways for help.
