Promethea,
Book 1 (1-6). [From DC Comics: University student
Sophie Bangs lives in a present-day New York City similar to our own, but
one dominated by science. Its multilevel constructions glow with neon, glimmer
with talking billboards and gleam in the headlights of floating cars. But
what interests Sophie isn't science, it's myth: specifically the recurring
myths and stories of a mystic warrior woman named Promethea, whose origins
seem to emerge from the dim memories of 5th century Egypt, when a young
girl fleeing her father's murderers slips somehow into the realm of ancient
gods, The Immateria. Researching a fictional trail through centuries, Sophie
calls on the widow of the most recent Promethea scribe, Barbara Shelley,
and quickly finds herself swept into a terrifying world of dark, deadly
spirits and desperate heroics. In a dizzying chase across the city, Barbara
begins to reveal the truth behind the Promethea stories, as she and Sophie
struggle to save their own lives! Sophie has the key to their rescue...
the power is within her. Will she have the resolve to use it? Join her on
this journey of discovery through beautifully illustrated mystic realms
and sorcerous perils as Sophie Bangs strives to take on the power of Promethea!]

world of The Immateria, where stories and ideas live, and armed with new

The Temple, and the computer-mad Pseunami. Perhaps the greatest challenge
for Sophie lies within, as she seeks arcane knowledge with Jack Faust and

anything you've seen or read before. With friend Stacia and a cadre of past
Prometheas at her side, Sophie will need all the intelligence, skill and
bravery she can summon to triumph.] |
Promethea,
Book 3 (13-18). [From DC Comics: Sophie Bangs'
life has been spiraling out of control since the day that she was mystically
transformed into the latest incarnation of Promethea, a centuries-old female

worse for the college co-ed as she and Barbara, the last woman to hold the
title of Promethea, embark on a spiritual and cosmic journey through the
many different realms of Heaven and Hell. Now as the two compatriots experience
mind-altering visions and encounter legendary figures from the past, they
must find a way home or be lost on the metaphysical plane of existence for
all eternity.] |
Promethea,
Book 4 (19-25). [From DC Comics: Sophie uses
the power of story to take on the persona of Promethea, and revels in the
new power and understanding it provides. Yet there are dire perils as well,
one of which causes the death of her mentor Barbara, the previous Promethea.
Now Sophie continues her exploration of the higher realms of the Immateria,
the ten spheres of the Kaballah, searching for Barbara's long-dead husband
through the realms represented by Jupiter and Saturn, as well as the lost
Abyss, and higher realms of paradise lost and godly knowledge that nearly
defy description. Meanwhile, back on Earth, a pair of government investigators
are closing in on Sophie, her friends and family, threatening to end the
life she has always known!] |

Promethea,
Book 5 (26-32). [From DC Comics: The final
volume of PROMETHEA, collecting issues #26-32! This is the story of the
end of the world, of the last days before the Apocalypse, with guest stars
from around the America's Best globe who try to do what they always do:
save the day!] Book of the Week 7/27/05: At first, Promethea seemed like a rehash of Moore's Supreme run, a meta-fictional exploration of a super-hero's various incarnations. But it quickly became clear that this was simply Moore's starting point, as Promethea evolved into his most ambitious and personal work to date. Here, Moore's ideas about consciousness, language, art, and magic are woven into an entertaining (if increasingly bizarre) narrative. The story is complemented by the magnificent art of J. H. Williams III and his collaborators Mick Gray and José Villarrubia, increasingly ambitious as the series progresses with its blend of traditional linework, computer-painted pencils, and photography, all to stunning effect. If Watchmen was Moore's masterpiece, Promethea is his magnum opus.
