But Powers may be the first time that a sustained crime-fiction comic has adopted elements of super-heroes—and boy, does it work. Hard-boiled detective Christian Walker and his new partner Deena Pilgrim work in a special unit of the police department that deals with crimes involving super-powered being. Not only is this perhaps the best crime comic ever written, but it also succeeds in presenting a fresh take on super-heroes, here seen through the eyes of the cops who have to clean up their messes. This is great stuff, here presented in a deluxe super-sized format. And while I'm not sure Oeming's clean, open art will benefit from the extra size, still the hardcover is cheaper than the two trades covering the same material. This is one of the best comics going, and if you've missed out on it, here's a great chance to get in on the ground floor.
