[From DC Comics: Offered again in a new printing, a single paperback volume collecting both the original run of MOONSHADOW and its sequel, FAREWELL MOONSHADOW. Journey from the farther reaches of outer space to the starry skies of the inner spirit as the young dreamer Moonshadow and his cynical alien companion ira set forth on the unforgettable intergalactic odyssey that science-fiction great Ray Bradbury called "beautiful, original, haunting."] Old Book of the Week 6/1/06: An earlier foray into fantasy by J. M. DeMatteis, this is a somewhat darker and certainly more adult story than Abadazad, but no less wonderful. Surreal, alternately intense and frivolous, it is the story of a boy, son of a hippy and a giant glowing ball of light, and his buddy, a grouchy perverted alien bear whose friendship is bought with porn, as they roam the universe. DeMatteis's philosophical and deceptively deep writing is perfectly complemented by Jon J Muth's beautifully painted art (at a time when full-process color was still quite rare). On the surface this is a light and breezy, if bizarre, read. Underneath, it is difficult and challenging. Either way, it is a worthwhile journey.
