Madman

Tundra, then Kitchen Sink, then Dark Horse, now AAA Pop/Oni Press. All written and drawn by Mike Allred except where noted.

Minis
1 Madman: The Oddity Odyssey (3-issue mini). [From Oni Press: Ten years ago, Madman hit the comics scene like a quick, Three Stooges-style jab to the eye. Armed with a yo-yo and a slightly left-of-center attitude, Frank Einstein is Snap City's most impressive masked crime fighter. In fact, he's kind of the only one! In this wacky debut, meet the whole eccentric cast of characters from the goofy genius, Dr. Flem to the despicably evil Mr. Mondstadt. And, of course, don't forget Joe, the love of Frank Einstein's life. This fearless beauty is the only one who sees past Madman's hideously disfigured face to the person within, and wants to know the true story of how Frank Einstein became Madman! Long out-of-print, Madman: The Oddity Odyssey is a seminal work of graphic literature, bridging the gaps of mainstream superhero mythos and the no-holds-barred world of independent, creator-driven comics. Oni Press is proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this amazing comic book by returning it to its original glory.]
2 Madman Adventures (3-issue mini). [From Oni Press: Yes, it's that Madman! Who else? Oni Press is proud to be reprinting the second mini-series in full-color! Originally released by Tundra, the trade paperback of these comics went out-of-print quite some time ago, leaving new Mike Allred fans (the folks who jumped on board with X-Force and The Atomics) floundering. They wanted to know all about Frank Einstein, but they couldn't make it happen. Now, they can! And this is the cool one, too, where Madman goes back in time and you get to see Mike draw cool dinosaurs and stuff. This is history, folks. You need to know it to understand the present. Plus, this edition features a new cover, the color version of the first ever Frank Einstein story, and a special gallery section!]
These were first published as minis by Tundra, then collected as trades by Kitchen Sink, with a deluxe hardcover edition by Graphitti. New editions of the trades have more recently been published by Oni Press.
Series (Dark Horse)
1 Madman Yearbook 95, aka Crash Course for the Ravers (1-5). [Originally published as Madman Yearbook 95, with the notion that the trades would be annual yearbooks; this naming scheme was dropped with the next volume. Recently reprinted as Crash Course for the Ravers. From Dark Horse Comics: The world's snappiest comic magazine is now the world's snappiest trade paperback collection! If you missed out on Madman's early hyperactive exploits, this 160-page volume is your toehold into Mike Allred's kinetic and killingly kitschy world! Witness Madman framed for a murder on the high seas! Follow him as he tracks down Dr. Flem's runaway robots! Watch and be amazed as he battles mutant street beatniks. Find out why Spin calls this hugely hip bimonthly comic "a kooky boogaloo!" and why The New York Times says that Madman Comics is "animated by a manic, pop-art delight in mass culture." Madman Comics is the book for those who appreciate offbeat storytelling and brilliant art. It's all here in one grand, gonzo package, wrapped in an all-new, unique, faux dust jacket, and even includes Madman paper action figures! (Frank Einstein has too much machismo to be a mere paper doll!) Don't miss out!]
2 Untitled (6-10). [At this point, Dark Horse began simply calling the volumes The Complete Madman Volume X. The spines of both volumes in the Limted Edition Box Set hardcovers bear this title. From Dark Horse Comics: The New York Times says, "Madman abounds in Flash Gordon gadgetry and slobbering leviathans direct from the pits of the netherworld." Sound like fun? You bet it is! And now's the time to find out for yourself, with the Madman Comics Yearbook '96! It's 152 pages of pop-art action, the kind that'll put out your eye if you don't put it down! From Madman's meeting with The Big Guy (co-scripted by Frank Miller!) to his run-in with the riled-up renegade robots, like a flash of karma you'll again understand what being a kid is all about, whatever age you may be!]
3 The Exit of Dr. Boiffard (11-15). [The remaining two volumes each had an individual title at the time of their publication, marking the third title scheme for the series in as many volumes. Madness, I say! Madness! From Dark Horse Comics: With Michael Allred's Madman: The G-Men from Hell series hitting the racks like a polkadot napalm balloon, now comes the atomic dessert, the long-awaited Complete Madman Comics Vol. 3, collecting Madman issues 11-15, including the four-part "The Exit of Dr. Boiffard," the epic Madman maelstrom that still has comics readers young and old asking, "How do you pronounce Boiffard?" Plus: "The Truth About Everything And All The Rest," a Madman title so long only a state-of-the-art trade paperback can hold it! Plus: the usual cosmic landfill of guest-artist pinups, galleries, beany copters, giant talking brains, and those cool little hors d'oeuvre swords! All in spectacular Mad-orama color by Laura Allred. You can't handle the truth!]
4 Heaven and Hell (16-20). [In a radical departure from its earlier practice, Dark Horse maintained the title scheme introduced in the previous volume for this one, giving it an individual title. From Dark Horse Comics: Frank Einstein has never led a normal life—as far as he knows—but lately his topsy-turvy times have been undeniably loony. In this fourth collection chronicling the life of comics' coolest undead guy, Frank goes from holiday giddiness to super-secret paranoia, friends become enemies, and sworn enemies become ... saviors? In this tome of 136 colorful pages, Frank makes amends with a beatnik ghoul, meets Santa Claus, gets his house fixed up, and goes on an unexpected adventure. It turns out fellow undead foes, Mattress and Crept, have gotten themselves in a snag, and it's up to Frank to find out what's up. Mysteries are explained, but there's plenty of confusion to take its place. It's a kooky book—take a look!]
