The Goon

Dark Horse. Written and drawn by Eric Powell.

Old Series of the Week 2/8/06: I deliberately didn't choose a specific volume for this goofy monster series about a mobster's war on the zombie population of his 30s-ish town, because several of the volumes make good entry points. Volume 0 comes first chronologically, but it is early, rough material. Volume 1 is more polished, but jumps into the middle of things. Volume 2 is better still, and has a couple of origin stories. And the hardcover Fancy Pants Edition contains all the stories that touch on the Goon's early days. The cool thing is, the series is very single issue-oriented, without major ongoing story-arcs, so you can pretty much jump in anywhere. So do it! Grab one and start reading; this is a fun series by a singular creator, and one of the most unique and indescribable series out there. (Did you notice that I barely tried to describe it?)
0 Rough Stuff (Vol. 1, 1-3). [From Dark Horse Comics: Dark Horse Comics brings you the origin of Eric Powell's The Goon, the earliest stories published for the very first time in color! The Zombie Priest has just set up shop on Lonely Street and intends to build an undead army, and the Goon's the only man who can stop him. His early battles with the undead are mixed with stories of the Goon's youth, as we meet his circus-freak clan and learn how he came to be the head of a notorious crime family. Also included in this volume is a look at the creation of the Goon and his world with a special "Evolution of The Goon" sketchbook section.]
1 Nothin' But Misery (Vol. 2, 1-4; Goon Color Special). [From Dark Horse Comics: The Goon is a laugh-out-loud, action-packed romp through the streets of a town infested with zombies. An insane priest is building himself an army of the undead, and there's only one man who can put them in their place: the man they call Goon. Dark Horse celebrates the launch of our new Goon bi-monthly series with this collection of last year's Goon series and The Goon Color Special, originally published by Albatross Exploding Funny Books; presented here for the first time in full-color.]
2 My Murderous Childhood (And Other Grievous Yarns) (Vol. 3, 1-4). [From Dark Horse Comics: The Goon and Franky have been best friends ever since they was tykes. Find out how the two little ankle-biters became best pals, and how they muscled their way into the rackets of big-time crime-boss, Labrazio--who, incidentally, nobody's seen in a while. This trip down memory lane ain't gonna be no joyride, neither. Franky and the Goon are going to have to take on a horde of zombies, an army of hoboes, a couple of grave robbin' mongoloids, a guy with a gold head and his killer robot, a pie-crazed skunk ape, one homely, man-crazy sea hag, and whole lot of other things that smell just as bad if not worse. Pick up a copy, because those uptown rich people may have the cops and their G-men, but down here all we got is the Goon. Collecting issues #1-4 of the Dark Horse series, plus the 8-page story from Drawing on Your Nightmares, "The Brothers Mud."]
3 Heaps of Ruination (5-8). [From Dark Horse Comics: Beware all undead minions and other variegated doers of badness! Rouse up trouble with the honest folks of Lonely Street and it's the Goon you'll answer to! Robot or alien, werewolf or vampire, zombie or gorilla (or zombie-gorilla), it makes no difference to the Goon--he'll serve you up a mouthful of broken teeth right quick, as evidenced by the fine tales collected in this fine volume‹the third in the ever-expanding line chronicling the triumphs and tragedies of the lone man brave enough to stand against the Zombie Priest and his ghoulish army of ... um ... ghouls.]
4 Virtue and the Grim Consequences Thereof (9-13). [From Dark Horse Comics: Giant man-eating eyeballs from another dimension, mad scientists, rampaging killer robots, and the Ghost of Christmas Past‹nothing out of the ordinary in the world of the Goon. Come take a traipse down Lonely Street with Goon and his pals as they defend their burg from all manner of monstrous disasters and ghouls in The Goon: Virtue and the Grim Consequences Thereof. This volume collects five magically dark and delightfully hilarious tales of chaos and daring-do, following the exploits of the man known only as The Goon as he fights his way through a horde of killer robots and even creatures from another dimension to help save his sometimes friend and ally Dr. Hieronymous Alloy from a mysterious disease. But there are plenty of bumps along the way, ultimately landing the Goon in Cade's Island Penitentiary, proving once more that no good deed goes unpunished.]
5 Wicked Inclinations (Contents unknown). [From Dark Horse Comics: The tide has turned in Goon's war against the undead hordes of the Zombie Priest--or has it? With Buzzard now preventing the harvest of any fresh corpses from the cemetery, the Priest grows desperate. So desperate, that he unleashes incantations of previously unseen power to create a whole new breed of minion--one that may be beyond even the strength of the Goon to contain. But one pays a price for conjuring such evil into the world, and the Zombie Priest quickly discovers that the cost of such power may be far more than he bargained for.]
Fancy Pants Edition (Vol. 1, 1-2; Vol. 3, 1, 3, 5, 9). [From Dark Horse Comics: The nameless man, the zombie priest, had come to town to build a gang from the undead. But even the undead fear… The Goon! The Fancy Pants Edition presents the essential stories of the Eisner Award-winning series The Goon recounting the events of his life in chronological order for the first time. Unveiling the histories of the Zombie Priest, Buzzard, Labrazio, and, of course, Goon and Franky, this collection is the perfect introduction to the Goon mythos and a must-have for any true Goon fanatic.]
Fancy Pants Edition 2 (Contents unknown). [From Dark Horse Comics: This special volume collects all the tales of one of The Goon's most nefarious villains -- the diabolical mad scientist, Dr. Hieronymous Alloy -- in one handsomely designed (and handsomely priced) signed hardcover. Chronicling the rise of the mysterious evil genius from his early days as a misunderstood visionary, to his status as one of the finest scientific minds in the world, and finally to his inevitable spiral into madness, this hardcover is a must-have for every serious fan of the Goon. What's more, every volume is signed by Powell himself. Buying this book should be like dodging a brick -- a no-brainer!]

Now a heapin' helping of the top names in comics and comedy put a new spin on their favorite characters! Among the distinguished creators featured in this, the very first Goon anthology, are comedians Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn (both of Comedy Central's Comedians of Comedy and Mr. Show), Reno: 911 co-creator Thomas Lennon, B.P.R.D. scribe John Arcudi, comics great Kevin Nowlan (Tomorrow Stories; Sandman; Superman), fan-favorite Humberto Ramos (Revelations; Spider-Man), Steve Niles, Ryan Sook, Mike Ploog, Bill Morrison, Arvid Nelson, Tony Moore, Hilary Barta, Roger Langridge, Scott Allie, and Todd Herman. Albatross contributes a little somethin' for the ladies. See the Goon universe as never before in The Goon Noir!]
Chinatown (OGN; w & a Eric Powell). [From Dark Horse Comics: Dark Horse is very proud to present the first original graphic novel from Eisner Award-laden swami Eric Powell. Powell has been sowing the seeds of Chinatown and the Mystery of Mr. Wicker for years in his award-winning bimonthly series The Goon, and salivating fans may now feast their eyes on the Goon's formative backstory of love, loss, and extortion -- a lengthy tale that demanded to be told in this uninterrupted format. Spiritual leader of Tennessee and hero to the Great Unwashed, Powell escaped catastrophic death and mother-shaming scandal to bring this work to fruition. He's a sensitive man in insensitive times. But be warned: this book ain't funny.]
