Crimson

DC/Wildstorm. Written by Brian Augustyn and Humberto Ramos; art by Humberto Ramos and Sandra Hope.

1 Loyalty and Loss (1-6). [From DC Comics: After being bitten by a vampire, angst-ridden teen Alex Elder's entire world is destroyed. Leaving his friends and family behind, he starts a new undead life, discovering a secret society existing in the gothic undergrounds of New York. Suffering from an unquenchable thirst for blood and unable to emerge in sunlight, the teenage vampire finds himself thrust into a blood feud that spans generations.] Old Book of the Week 11/2/05: Humberto Ramos spends his free time mixing high-concept fantasy with surprisingly sophisticated theology, first in Crimson and more recently in Out There. Crimson is a vampire story, but here the vampires play a complex and sophisticated role in a larger conflict between heaven and hell. Don't be fooled by the cute, manga-flavored art; despite frequent light moments, this is serious stuff. Seriously good stuff!
2 Heaven & Earth (7-12). [From DC Comics: Coping with life as an undead being, Alex begins a journey to find Van Fleet. He is the only one that can tell him the truth about Ekimus and Lisseth and also reveal the legend of the chosen one. But as the cursed teenager continues his painful existence, he soon learns that his life trials are about to become more complicated as the archangels from Heaven and the master knight St. George have joined the earthly battle.]
3 Earth Angel (13-18). [From DC Comics: Third in the Crimson collection, this book continues the adventures of Alex Elder, a normal teenager who suddenly inherits abnormal problems when he is bitten by a vampire. In this installment, Alex befriends an amnesiac and mortal angel named Zophiel who has fallen from the grace of God and been banished to Earth. But before this friendship can truly blossom, Zophiel is kidnapped by Tan, a delusional would-be messiah. Alex and his friend Joe quickly descend beneath the sewers of New York to a secret city to save their new compatriot and learn that some actions result in dire consequences.]
4 Redemption (19-24). [From DC Comics: In this final installment in the CRIMSON story, Alex Elder, the unfortunate teenager that had his entire life changed by a simple vampire bite, makes his final stand. With the world in flames, the ultimate showdown between good and evil, dragon and man, and God and the Devil is taking place. And as the fate of the world and all existence hang in the balance, only Alex and his allies, Joe, Ekimus, Scarlet X, and Zophiel stand between triumphant survival and ultimate destruction.]
