Amelia Rules!

Renaissance Press (series)/iBooks (trades). All written and drawn by Jimmy Gowney.

1 In With the Out Crowd (Renaissance Press; 1-5).
After the first volume was (self-) published by Renaissance Press, iBooks started over by reprinting it under a different title and with a new cover. When iBooks went under, Renaissance re-issued the series in a smaller format. The images on the left are iBooks editions, and on the right Renaissance.
1 The Whole World's Crazy (1-5). [From iBooks: These all-ages color stories about a girl and her group of friends are funny and touching with enough bite to keep them from being too "kiddy." Amelia's parents have just gotten divorced, and she and her mom have moved in with her Aunt Tanner. Like many kids, she sees herself as the only normal one, surrounded by crazy friends and relatives. She hangs out with a varied group of misfits—some of who really are weird, like Pajamaman, a kid who never speaks or changes out of his sleepwear—to avoid thinking about the trauma she's facing at home. Many of the stories are linked, connected by short monologues in which Amelia explains more about her situation, the characters, or how she feels. These kids are real—that means that sometimes they're evil, greedy, and self-centered. Sometimes they don't understand or see things that are obvious to us, and when they do notice, it's the biggest thing in the world to them. That vision is an eye-opener for the reader, and Jimmy Gownley is a genius at capturing their perspective. These kids are realistic while still being sympathetic and even funny.] Old Book of the Week 12/29/05: For a different kind of strange girl than Strange Girlvery different—Amelia Rules is an all-ages (in the sense of "for all ages," not "for children only") book featuring a bright, imaginative, sometimes obnoxious little girl facing the problems that come with being, well, a bright, imaginative, sometimes obnoxious little girl. And the book's charm and wit are aided by very nice printing on very good paper—which is unusual for iBooks. If you're manly enough to be seen with a kiddie book, this is the one to try.
2 What Makes You Happy (6-10). [From iBooks: Life never seems to slow down for nine-year-old Amelia Louise McBride. There's work to do at school and home. In her spare time, as Princess Powerful, she has to join her teammates in G.A.S.P. (Gathering of Awesome Super Pals) in their adventures. Then there's a trip to Manhattan with her friends to see her dad (her parents are divorced). And on top of all that, she has to come to terms with the fact that her rock-n-roller Aunt Tanner is a hottie! Oh, and what's up with all those ninjas...? Told with hip wit and charm, Amelia Rules!: What Makes You Happy is a book kids will love to read, and adults will love to read with them.]
3 Superheroes (11-16). [From Renaissance: This Harvey and Eisner-nominated series collects issues 11-16. Amelia McBride is facing more changes -Amelia may be moving again, new friend Trish is hiding a terrible secret, and superhero-wannabe Reggie has vowed to destroy the evil Legion of Steves. This first novel-length Amelia Rules! story masterfully combines drama and humor.]
